Geography: Torrent's Maw

by Wayfarer

Torrent's Maw lies beyond the city walls, where the waters run turbid and the currents swift—a place said to be fit only for reckless boatmen. Since ancient times, the successful travel the broad thoroughfares, while the poor must cross the perilous shoals. Refugees from every direction gather here, their entire fortunes bound up in a single boat—and whether the waters lie calm or the shoal runs wild, they stand by one another, never willing to abandon their own. Thus, those who sail Torrent's Maw are not truly reckless men at all, but rather men who possess true fearlessness and true bonds of fellowship. Born between heaven and earth, where is there a place that is not a wayfarer's inn, and who among us does not sail some boat of his own?
