Classroom Daydreams

by Zhe Tainan

A man already fallen to the ground cannot be struck down again. If one does not press forward, then hardship disperses of itself. Is this not a kind of invincibility? ... Lately I often feel alone, profoundly alone. Is the pursuit of learning truly such a lonely thing? If I do not befriend others, will they not come to befriend me? I may have my reasons for not seeking out my friends, but if my friends do not seek me out, then what are they waiting for? ... Whenever I sit down to read and study, I suddenly feel the urge to drink water, relieve myself, or wash my hands. Only sitting still fails to please me. How very strange. ... It rains heavily. Is it the rain that enfolds me, or I who enfold the rain? I would take my lady's hand, yet she draws back. Is it she who refuses me, or I who refuse her?
