When it's done (spoiler)
In the desert, there is a monk who has returned from fetching scriptures and is heading to Chang'an. By his own account, having been away from his homeland for over thirty years, he no longer recognizes this vastly changed Jade Gate Pass. You encounter and aid him multiple times along the journey, finally seeing him off beyond Jade Gate Pass. As he departs, he tells you his Dharma name is, Wukong.
