Legend has it that on Mount Ashoka in Siming there once was a Spirit Eel Well, home to a divine eel that guarded the pagoda. Later, when King Wusu brought the relics back to Hangzhou, the divine eel was never seen again.
When the new well was dug at South Pagoda Temple, the eel's shadow came back, and people took it for a miracle.
