In the fifth year of Xiande, a great fire broke out in the south city and spread to the South Pagoda. A monk, in a fit of selfless courage, pressed through the raging flames and climbed three floors, shielding the Ashoka relics with his own body as he brought them down. His robes and skin were burned by the fire, but the relics survived unharmed.
