Mother said she isn't leaving us. She's playing hide-and-seek.
She said when she gets better, she'll come find us. When she does, she'll take us to kick a ball up the back mountain.
We left the ball by the door. So when Mother comes looking, she'll know we're still here.
But it's been dark for a long time now.
She hasn't come.
