"Long has the Way been absent from the world. Heaven shall make the Master its Clarion Chime." In the second year of Tianyu, Zhu Wen cast covetous eyes upon the Ten Sages' Collection, plotting to seize it, yet his scheme came to naught, and in its wake the Baima Incident was wrought. The Inkbound Order, having learned of his designs in advance, ordered its disciples to each take up volumes of the sacred texts and scatter to the countryside, hiding them among the common folk. In the decades that followed, three generations of Laureate endured untold hardship before the texts were recovered, one by one. Elder Changle raised a bell tower beside Tianyi Tower. At intervals of his choosing, he would bid a disciple strike the bell, and when its sound rang out, all those within the Order, wherever they dwelt or whatever their duties, were to hasten with all speed to the tower, receive one volume, and carry it to a place of safety. This rite was named the "Rite of the Sages." The ceremony was established both to commemorate what had come to pass and to rehearse it anew, so that those who came after would forever hold in their hearts the duty of the Clarion Chime, to carry the Way forward, and never let it be forgotten.
