  • The Swan's First Flight

Even Kuang Anshi himself may not know when he truly learned to stand on his own. Perhaps it was during his time at the Divinecraft Pavilion. Whenever someone came looking for a volume amid the sect's vast sea of records, he would instinctively call out, "Senior Brother Brant, come see where this book is, will you?" Only after a long silence would he remember that Brant had gone north on his travels and had yet to return. So he could only search shelf by shelf on his own. By the time he emerged, book in hand and covered in dust, half an hour had passed, and the fellow disciples who had been hurrying off to class were long gone. Or perhaps it was at Yuling Hall, while seeing patients. The line stretched on and on, and all manner of mechanism-related ailments left him dizzy with confusion. He would think that if only Senior Brother Tu were here, even the most obscure mechanism charts would be nothing more than light work to him. But every time he glanced back out of habit, he would remember that Tu, too, had already returned home. And so he could only bend over the diagrams himself and work through each problem one by one. Scenes like these played out again and again in the first year after Senior Brother Brant and Senior Brother Tu left. Perhaps they continued in the years that followed. It was only that, little by little, he forgot the self who had always been asking others for help. As the two of them gradually faded from his world, the junior brother who had once been so well protected finally had to step onto the stage himself. In the fourteenth year after their departure, a new name was bestowed in Hidden Mountain: Swan. Like a swan taking flight, soaring a thousand miles. This was the name granted to Kuang Anshi.
