Canglang Fan
The "Song of Canglang" inscribed on the fan is an admonition handed down by the Spring's Return Hall. Each brother received one. The elder brother, Zizhen, always knew how to please the family elders. He would unfold his fan and explain that clear water was like West Lake, while turbid water was like the Qiantang River: clear water had its delicate beauty, turbid water its broad expanse, and the practice of medicine should embrace both. What exactly he meant by that, he never explained. He simply stood there, handsome and smiling with fan in hand, and won a roomful of praise. Once they had slipped out of the hall, Chen Zixi tapped his brother on the shoulder with the fan's ribs and laughed. "You're the clear water everyone likes, and I'm the muddy water everyone scorns." Chen Zizhen shook his head. "Zixi, it is clear water that cannot abide even a grain of sand."
